Social media has become such a trend and not likely to ever
not be one. Whether it be you are wanting to connect with a friend or see what
is happening in the news – there is something for everyone.
Now personally, when speaking about news; social media has dramatically increased the rate it sends to others. I being on twitter as well as millions of others worldwide have discovered this is the quickest site (that I know of as of right now) that updates the world on what is going on. From something as simple as a weather update to as much as a celebrity death there is always someone who first shares such news to allow others in.
Now let us look at the actual quality of the news that is shared.…
In a way the quality of the news has kind of decreased. News that is shared over social media, there is always that chance that it is not accurate or misleading. Anyone can create a ‘headlining news story’ but they cannot always provide truthful facts/evidence that what is happening has actually happened.
So maybe small bits and pieces of a story may be shared over social media, but in the end the reader has to but all of those small bits together to get the whole picture, until the actual full story has been released. The thing though, those readers may not want to keep up with those small bits – they probably just want the full story and continue on. Then again, there are those individuals who may be so caught up with a story that they will continue to search and search to get all the information about a story.

So I’ll give this a quick summary…the rate at which news
spreads via social media has increased 100%, but the quality not so much.
I definitely agree with you that the quality of the news has decreased due to social media. I think being able to see snippets of news information on sites such as Twitter and Facebook, opens a gateway for anyone who is interested in the story. For example when something happens if you read a tweet giving you a short summary of the event that is occurring, you may begin looking on reliable news sites for further information on the event.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! The quality/validity of news has dropped drastically as the popularity of social media rises. I think a major issue that unlike television where journalists are required to have a specific number of sources before they air the news but there is no jurisdiction when it comes to putting 'news' on the web. Anyone can write a post and claim it to be true, and worse companies whose profession it is to spread news such as FOX and CNN have been guilty of falsifying claims.
