Social Media - Just a fad...or a Revolutionary Shift?
Social Media, in my opinion can be described as a way to communicate as well as discover ways to keep in touch and connected via technology.
This is a revolutionary shift just because of how advanced our world has become. There is no way this is just a 'fad' due to the fact that social media is always changing and something new comes around.
Let's go back a decade or so...
What started out small has grown enormously. When I was younger it was Myspace that was the biggest trend and the 'must have' website to be a part of. A few years later, the biggest game changer and still one of the most popular sites was created. This of course being so familiar as it is - Facebook.
Facebook has become the most popular form of communication for friends, and family. This site is always changing; for example when this first came around, there was no such thing as a 'like' button, or 'video message', it was simply 'send friend request' and 'what's on your mind?'
Flash forward 2 years to 2006, Twitter has now became the next hit of the 'Social Media' world and still rising. This site is a simple way to discover what your favourite celebrity is up too or just to post a 'tweet' as to what is going on in your own life and share that to your followers.
Just a few more popular ones to add that are widely popular: YouTube, Instagram, Pintrest and the list just goes on.
Adding in, I found this link as I was searching around and thought this was an interesting read and suited this topic: http://www.businessinsider.com/a-brief-history-of-social-media-2011-7
In the end, Social Media will always be growing, will always be changing. If this is what has become of Social Media within the past 15 years, who knows how much more this will advance and change the forms of communication between one another.

ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you, social media will always be growing. Technology in general has changed tremendously in such ways that make it a lot easier for people to communicate with one another through E-mail, Skype, and Messenger.
ReplyDeleteGreat points Molly, I definitely agree that social media is forever changing and it is hard to predict where it is headed to next. I was also apart of the age where I was young when social media was first starting to develop. It being an influence from such a young age has made it almost become a way of life for this generation. Technology has made it so easy to communicate instantly and stay connected with people that we may not have been able to stay in contact with before.
ReplyDeleteMolly,
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree that social media is rising and becoming huge, have you ever thought about how all those social networks are free and yet more and more are coming out?
Creating a social network is a way to make money, they sell everything you put into the social network and sell it to advertisers to make money.
Yes, they can do that since you agreed to their terms and service which said they are going to do that. So, think about what you post and edit your profile to say, because one day there will be an ad that you will click on because they know you will click on since they gathered so much information about you.
I agree social media is always changing, and thus it can't be a fad but I also think that just that definition of it is sort of limiting because we're examining it in relation to a fad, instead of all that it is and provides. Social media is so much more than an ever-changing thing. I think it's a whole new medium not just on an interpersonal scale but for people to market themselves and their talents like artists such as Humans of New York and YouTubers who make their living producing/writing/directing their short films and videos. It's a platform for people to go from something as minute-seeming as networking to an entire career
